San Francisco, 2006

Located adjacent to the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco’s SOMA district, this tenant improvement project transformed a vacant 2,700 square foot office space into a modern, urban gallery environment for showcasing equally contemporary and tectonic artwork. Offices, storage, and private functions were grouped into a core at the center of the space, sheathed in sheet metal and penetrated by regular intervals of translucent glass panels to maintain visual connection to the surrounding gallery room. In essence, the architectural volume was carved away, creating a sequence of unique display cases and framing cavities within the metal mass for exhibiting smaller pieces of the collection.
